In it, a spiteful mother beheads her stepson and blames it on her daughter. She then cooks the corpse and feeds it to his husband, as the daughter picks up the bones from under the table and plants it under a juniper tree on the family's garden.
A small bird appears from the grave, singing the song in question while picking a pair of new shoes, a gold chain and a mill stone, and then carries them to the house.
The bird then gives the shoes to the daughter, the chain to the father and drops the stone on the stepmother, killing her.
As she dies, the bird turns into a boy again and the story ends. The film borrows some thematic elements this tale.
Goofs The younger witch is shown with various tattoos of magical symbols on her body, particularly stars and the pentagram.
However, she also strangely has what looks like a Star of David on her arm, which symbolizes the Jewish faith and is not connected to sorcery.

The space between action scenes gracefully exposes character development for characters I actually cared about. Uncharacteristically sophisticated dialog is punctuated by expertly timed and delivered, memorable one-liners.
Sadly, post production did not nail the timeline for the final battle. Mina was unashamedly idle for what seemed like many minutes of story time and was surprisingly unthreatened, unhindered, unfatigued, and unscathed for a machine gunner.
Ben might have been able to hit Muriel as she escaped the final battle, if she had unwittingly both announced her passage and crossed directly into his field of fire.
As a benefit, the Boss battle could be much more gruesome, and tragic. The change from overconfidence to loss of hope and impending death fought off with only last ditch anger at having lost is a very tragic and unnerving thing to behold.
It was over too quickly. Would Hansel and Gretel have experienced gut wrenching, conflicted empathy for something loathsome but still human?
What possible childhood trials could have contributed to so cold and numb a pathos for witches? Why are they compelled to end the voice that could reveal meaning or insight to their own murky, tortured past?
I will watch it again. I will recommend this film to others, but not for kids. I will advocate playing this film to monitors around the house during Halloween parties as a conversation kicker.
A fun movie not a great movie with good special effects, great make-up, good cinematography, outstanding sound, decent performances and some humor too.
Not for my kid when he was young, and not for those that are uncomfortable with the aforementioned qualities. But for me good enough to enjoy periodically.
If Famke was more prominent especially without the makeup - which is great but not flattering I'd watch it even more often. The quality of the Blu-ray is excellent - showcasing all the good qualities of sound and picture the movie has to offer.
This one has some pretty good demo material for showing off your home theatre. What a fun movie to watch! The witches are hilarious and the action is really good.
The arsenal is impressive. Gemma is hot and I always enjoy Jeremy's performances. Don't expect great revelations or insights into the human condition, but do have a fun watching the longer, unrated version.

Occasionally the language seemed a bit out of place, just like the weapons were, for the time. For instance when under-stress our two heroes liked to use the F word.
No big deal, just that it somehow seemed out of place, and too contemporary for the surrounding mood. The ending left the door open for a sequel or two if it was a success at the box-office.
I did like the friendship that developed between Gretel and an unlikely character in the story. There was also a love story with Hansel.

Although they've been watered down over the years, the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm actually started out as quite dark and gruesome pieces of work.
Hansel and Gretel, after all, involves two children turning the tables on a nasty old lady by burning her alive in her oven. What happens next in the story may nowadays be considered suitable for kids.
What happens next in this film version of it most definitely isn't. Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters starts with the familiar opening.
Then fast forwards to years later and shows us the siblings all grown up. And getting their own back on witches by having become bounty hunters who specialise in dealing with them.
Both have a tough no nonsense attitude. A reputation that precedes them. Weaponry that doesn't quite fit the time period. And American accents.
But when hired to deal with a witch who has taken children from a small town, they find there's a bit more to this job than meets the eye Horror meets Steampunk [something set centuries back involving fantastical technology in the style of the time.
Like something written by Jules Vern] in a twisted take on the original tale. This tries to mix genres and succeeds at doing that pretty well.
While Renner pretty much looks dour throughout the movie, Arterton seems determined to have fun with her ass-kicking female heroine of a role, and her portrayal of Gretel resembles a Lara Croft for the medieval ages.
The scene-stealer however is Janssen, the former Bond villain once again relishing the opportunity to play against type as the villain and putting in a deliciously over- the-top performance as Muriel.
Other supporting actors don't make much of an impression — including Thomas Mann, a firm Hansel and Gretel devotee who gets some laughs from his fanboy behaviour and eventually sees his wish come true to be a witch hunter like his heroes.
And we suspect, how much you will end up enjoying this new twist to the classic fairy tale will also depend on your expectations. Compared to the recent spate of fairytale-inspired Hollywood movies like 'Red Riding Hood' or 'Snow White and the Huntsman', it veers most far off from its source material to tell an entirely different story.
The result of that novelty is something bloody all right, that can also prove to be bloody good fun if you're looking for an adult-oriented blend of action, adventure, fantasy, horror and comedy.
