L'indomani i Winchester si recano a casa di Melissa, sospettando che sia lei il mutaforma, ma la donna supera la prova con l'argento e conferma di aver sempre saputo della relazione extraconiugale del marito.

La sera stessa Melissa viene aggredita da Dan, ma riesce a scappare e a raggiungere i Winchester al motel. Qui racconta di come la sua parrucchiera, a cui aveva confidato il tradimento del marito, le avesse dato un incantesimo per riavere indietro Dan, definendosi una "strega bianca".

Poco dopo Dan irrompe nella stanza del motel per uccidere Melissa, ma Dean la bacia, facendosi quindi passare la maledizione e poi scappano. Decidono quindi di recarsi dalla strega, Sonja.

Sam, al piano di sopra riesce a trovare il cuore ma viene attaccato da Sonja che lo immobilizza ad una sedia. Sam sta per essere ucciso da Sonja, ma Melissa entra nel negozio e minaccia la strega, la quale si distrae permettendo a Sam di spararle e ucciderla.

Mentre Dean sta per essere ucciso dal Qareen, Sam pugnala il suo cuore salvando il fratello. Dean spiega a Sam che vuole ucciderla con tutto se stesso, ma quando si trova vicina a lei succede qualcosa, di inspiegabile, che gli impedisce di farle del male.

Francia , : in una base della Gestapo un ufficiale nazista viene ucciso dalla sua amante, Delphine Seydoux, che si rivela essere membro degli uomini di lettere, che poi si appropria di un manufatto che apparteneva all'ufficiale.

Sam facendo delle ricerche scopre che Dio ha toccato vari oggetti che hanno assorbito un'impronta del Suo potere. Delphine mostra l'oggetto a Dean, si tratta di un pezzo dell' Arca dell'Alleanza.

Delphine spiega a Dean che lei ha messo vari sigilli mistici nel USS Bluefin che probabilmente hanno interferito con il potere dell'angelo, quindi decide di rimuoverli.

Sam tra gli archivi degli uomini di lettere trova gli appunti su un incantesimo angelico mai sperimentato, che permetterebbe a un arcangelo di assorbire la forza del Paradiso per eliminare i sigilli, ma dato che non ci sono arcangeli che possano aiutarli decide di provare con qualcos'altro.

Brimson, Missouri. Durante un incontro di wrestling Larry Lee "Il Boia" batte Shawn Harley; al termine dell'incontro Larry, come da tradizione, mette un cappio al collo dello sconfitto Harley, ma essendo ubriaco rischia di fare seriamente del male all'avversario, motivo per cui i due negli spogliatoi hanno un diverbio.

Larry rimane solo nello spogliatoio, quando va via la luce e viene impiccato con la sua stessa corda. I Winchester leggono la notizia e decidono di partecipare al funerale, dal momento che il wrestler era il preferito di John, il padre dei due cacciatori, che li portava spesso a quegli incontri.

All'inferno Lucifero mette i demoni alla ricerca di un'altra Mano di Dio e continua a trattare Crowley come il suo cagnolino.

Al funerale di Larry Dean incontra Gunner Lawless, il suo idolo quando era bambino, mentre Sam incontra Rio, la sua prima cotta, un tempo manager mentre ora lavora come speaker agli incontri.

I ragazzi partecipano ad un evento organizzato in memoria di Larry, in cui Hellrazor si scontra contro Gunner Lawless che vince l'incontro, con gioia di Sam e Dean che si divertono come quando erano bambini.

Finito l'incontro, un uomo che era all'evento con il figlio, esce dal locale e viene ucciso. Sul corpo dell'uomo vengono ritrovati dei tagli, dei simboli, e i fratelli pensano che possa trattarsi di un caso per loro.

Sam torna al motel per fare delle ricerche, mentre Dean rimane al locale per ricavare qualche informazione; non trovando nessuno Dean inizia a divertirsi sul ring, per poi venire interrotto da Rio.

Dean allora mette dell'acqua santa negli alcolici dei wrestler per scoprire se tra loro ci sia un demone. Intanto all'inferno un demone libera Crowley, che uccide due altri demoni che tentano di fermarlo.

I Winchester vanno quindi nella camera di Harley ma la trovano soqquadro, senza traccia dell'uomo. Harley si risveglia legato ad una sedia e chiede scusa a Gunner per averlo colpito al bar, pregandolo di non fargli del male.

Prova ad uccidere Lucifero, ma Simmons si contrappone tra i due e si sacrifica al suo posto venendo disintegrata dal potere di Crowley.

Dean viene attaccato da Gunner e legato ad una sedia, e gli racconta di come abbia venduto l'anima dieci anni prima per vincere il titolo di campione, in quanto disperato e stupido.

Grand Rapids, Michigan. Una donna, Naoki, sta ristrutturando la casa che ha appena comprato, quando sente la figlia Kat urlare al piano di sopra.

La bambina dice di aver sentito dei passi, ma la madre la rassicura dicendole che era solo un incubo. Poco dopo la luce nella camera di Kat va via e la porta si chiude all'improvviso; la bambina si nasconde sotto al letto, ma qualcuno la afferra e la trascina via.

Subito pensano ad uno spirito vendicativo o ad un poltergeist. Dopo aver parlato con la madre in ospedale si recano a casa della donna, dove la vicina di casa racconta che anni prima un'altra coppia di agenti dell'FBI aveva visitato quella casa: subito intuiscono che si tratta di Bobby e Rufus.

Sam e Dean ispezionano la casa e rilevano ovunque forti campi elettromagnetici, avvalorando la tesi del fantasma. All'ospedale Sam e Dean parlano con la dottoressa che era presente quando sono avvenuti i primi attacchi, la quale riferisce che tutto si sta ripetendo come anni prima, ma in quel caso madre e figlio si sono risvegliati il giorno dopo perfettamente sani.

Nel Nido le anime vedono le cose che amano, rendendole vulnerabili: infatti Mary aveva visto suo marito e suo figlio morti.

Nel mondo reale intanto il corpo della vittima deperisce e muore. Dean viene attaccato e si risveglia nel Nido, dove gli appare suo fratello morto; una volta ripresosi dalla visione inizia a disegnare il sigillo, e poco dopo incontra Kat, che dice a Dean di vedere altre persone oltre a loro, ma Dean ancora non ci riesce.

Anche Bobby era stato attaccato dalla creatura e condotto nel Nido, dove aveva visto "i suoi ragazzi", Sam e Dean, morti.

Trova poi il bambino e la sua mamma e anche lui inizia a vedere molte altre anime intrappolate nella casa. Viene poi attaccato dal divoratore di anime, che prende possesso del corpo del cacciatore nel mondo reale e attacca Rufus, per impedirgli di completare il sigillo.

Nel frattempo Dean completa il disegno e inizia anche lui a vedere le altre anime, quando viene attaccato dal mostro che prende possesso di lui e attacca Sam nel mondo reale.

Rufus nel passato aveva sparato a Bobby con dei proiettili al salgemma per allontanare il mostro senza ferire l'amico, e ha quindi potuto completare il sigillo, permettendo a Bobby, al bambino e alla madre di risvegliarsi.

Dean e Sam affrontano i due licantropi uccidendoli, liberando Corbin e Michelle, ma uno dei licantropi prima di morire aveva sparato a Sam che rischia di morire.

Corbin soffoca Sam uccidendolo apparentemente, tra l'altro Sam si era accorto che Corbin era stato infettato da un licantropo. Usciti dal bosco trovano un poliziotto che stordisce Dean con un taiser elettrico dato che voleva tornare nel bosco a riprendere il corpo del fratello.

Dean all'ospedale, credendo Sam morto, assume un notevole quantitativo di medicinali con l'aiuto di Michelle nella speranza di convincere un mietitore a riportare Sam in vita.

Intanto Corbin si trasforma in un licantropo. Sam nel frattempo rinviene e scopre che i licantropi sopravvissuti la notte precedente lo hanno raggiunto, tra cui la barista.

Corbin, che ha scoperto di essere diventato un licantropo, uccide la dottoressa e un poliziotto. I dottori sono in grado di curare Sam e capiscono che quando Corbin aveva cercato di uccidere Sam, il suo corpo era entrato sotto shock causando la morte apparente.

L'episodio si conclude con un dialogo tra Dean e Michelle, devastata dalla morte di Corbin. Dean mente a Sam su quanto aveva fatto quando pensava che suo fratello fosse morto.

La strega poi spia una conversazione tra Crowley e i Winchester, ma invece di riferire ad Amara che hanno trovato un piano per eliminarla mente dicendo che non sanno ancora cosa fare.

Invia poi un messaggio ai tre con la sua magia: "Sono tornata dal regno dei morti Fergus". La strega decide di aiutarli ad aprire nuovamente la gabbia e intrappolare Lucifero.

I due eseguono quindi un esorcismo per espellere Crowley prima che venga ucciso. Lucifero riprende possesso del tramite, e nel frattempo la protezione dell'olio santo viene meno.

Crowley scappa, mentre Rowena continua a rimanere nascosta; Lucifero attacca i Winchester intento a ucciderli, quando arriva Amara, la quale non fidandosi di Rowena l'aveva seguita.

I Winchester decidono di mettere da parte le loro divergenze circa il da farsi con Castiel, in quanto si erano ripromessi di accettare le decisioni degli altri anche quando non erano d'accordo, ma alla fine decidono di cercarlo e riportarlo a casa.

Gunnison Colorado , : due fratelli, Jessy e Matty, stanno andando a pescare e attraversano il bosco quando Matty viene rapito da un essere con gli occhi verdi, senza che suo fratello minore possa fare nulla per aiutarlo.

Sam e Dean vanno a Gunnison per indagare su dei casi di sparizione, una testimone racconta di aver visto una creatura rapire la sua amica Libby e descrive la creatura come qualcosa di non umano, con occhi verdi scintillanti, calva, nuda e senza organi maschili e femminili.

Quando ha ritrovato la sua amica nel bosco, questa tremava ed emetteva lo stesso suono che avevano sentito prima di essere attaccate; quando infine Libby ha alzato la testa, ha potuto notare gli stessi occhi verdi scintillanti della creatura.

Dean viene contattato al telefono dall'amica di Libby che vuole andare nel bosco e vuole che Dean l'accompagni, mentre Sam va a fare ricerche.

Dean viene attaccato nel bosco da Libby, ma viene salvato da due cacciatori: Cesar e Jessy quest'ultimo ormai diventato ormai adulto. I due gli spiegano che questi mostri hanno comportamenti molto simili a quelli di una cicala e sono chiamati Bisaan: appaiono ogni 27 anni e prendono possesso dei corpi umani per accoppiarsi dato che nella loro forma originale non hanno organi riproduttivi, e per alcuni giorni i loro involucri umano sono usati come incubatrici per le loro uova.

Le persone rapite muoiono dopo la schiusura delle uova e la nuova generazione di Bisaan ripete il processo dopo altri 27 anni.

Mentre Cesar e Dean cercano la tana nel bosco, Sam e Jessy si recano a casa dello sceriffo che aveva seguito il caso 27 anni prima per fargli alcune domande.

Lo sceriffo, dopo un po' di insistenza da parte di Sam e Jessy, ammette di essere riuscito ad entrare nella tana ma al suo interno aveva trovato anche sua figlia ed era stato costretto a ucciderla; desiderando nascondere quanto era successo, all'epoca aveva dato del pazzo a Jessy, dicendogli che si era inventato tutto.

Vengono quindi raggiunti da Sam e Jessy: assieme decidono di bruciare le uova e di dare una sepoltura degna di un cacciatore a Matty, il fratello di Jessy, i cui resti erano ancora nella tana.

Mentre il corpo di Matty brucia sulla pira, Dean parlando con Sam considera l'ipotesi di reclutare Jessy e Cesar nella loro lotta contro Amara, ma si tira indietro quando i due dicono loro di volersi ritirare dalla caccia e di voler vivere felicemente come coppia.

Inizialmente sprezzante, Metatron resta sconvolto quando Chuck si rivela essere Dio. Chuck racconta a Metatron di aver viaggiato il mondo in lungo e in largo e di voler parlare solamente delle cose che ha fatto come essere umano.

Chuck in un primo momento si infuria, ma poi riprende la scrittura della sua autobiografia. Sam e Dean sono sempre alle prese con la nebbia che infetta anche Sam, mentre risparmia Dean.

Nel bar Chuck sale sul palco e, accompagnandosi con la chitarra, canta una canzone Dink's Song ; nel mentre, un commosso Metatron legge le ultime pagine dell'autobiografia.

A Hope Springs la nebbia e l'infezione improvvisamente spariscono. Tutti gli abitanti, inclusi quelli che erano stati uccisi o erano morti, ritornano a vivere.

Tenendolo in mano, escono in strada dove, tra le altre persone, vedono Chuck. I Winchester esprimono a Chuck i loro dubbi sulla sua persona.

Mentre i Winchester si recano Lewis, Metatron li contatta e chiede di poterli incontrare. Arrivati a Lewis fanno la conoscenza di un uomo, l'unico sopravvissuto alla nebbia, che dice loro di chiamarsi Donatello; gli racconta di come la nebbia fosse densa e fitta e di come le persone abbiano cominciato a tossire e a mostrare segni neri sul corpo.

Poi racconta di essere stato colpito da un fulmine, che all'improvviso ha fatto chiarezza nella sua mente e gli ha portato un grado di conoscenza tale per cui ora sa cose che non aveva mai saputo prima: simboli, voci e lingue che non aveva mai parlato, assieme a orribili visioni di distruzione e morte.

Amara compare nuovamente a Dean chiedendogli di incontrarlo da solo. Sam e Dean portano Donatello al bunker e lungo la strada gli spiegano cosa stia succedendo e gli raccontano di Amara.

Arrivati al bunker trovano Chuck in mutande che sta usando il computer di Dean. Donatello chiede a Chuck se il suo essere ateo rappresenta un problema e Chuck gli risponde che il "libero arbitrio" era incluso nel "kit".

Donatello dice di sapere dove si nasconde Amara. Per distrarla e farla uscire dal suo nascondiglio, Dean si incontra con lei in un bosco.

Gli fanno promettere di aiutarli a uccidere Amara, altrimenti non lo libereranno. Dean dice ad Amara che gli dispiace di non poter gestire l'attrazione che lo lega a lei.

Amara capisce che Dean ha parlato con Dio e che l'ha tradita. L'attacco di Metatron fallisce, comunque le suggerisce di perdonare suo fratello e risparmiare la creazione, ma Amara lo distrugge annientandolo.

Amara si piazza in mezzo alla strada, bloccando la fuga di Sam, Lucifero e Donatello. Sta per ucciderli quando interviene Chuck, che occasionalmente risponde a qualche preghiera e li teletrasporta nuovamente nel Bunker.

Qu rivede Lucifero per la prima volta dopo millenni e lo guarisce dalle sue ferite. I Winchester salutano Donatello il quale deve riorganizzare la sua vita dopo aver incontrato Dio, Lucifero e il Buio: di sicuro non pensa di poter tornare a dichiararsi ateo.

Dean informa Sam su quali siano i piani di Amara che lo riguardano: vuole che lui faccia parte per sempre di lei. Non in senso metaforico, ma letterale.

Lucifero e Chuck sono nel bunker e stanno avendo un battibecco quando arrivano Sam e Dean. Lucifero risponde che i nemici dei suoi nemici sono suoi amici e quindi si dice disposto ad appoggiare Amara.

Chuck e Lucifero parlano per sottintesi e Lucifero manda tutti al diavolo. Crowley riunisce tutti i demoni e li invita a ricostruire assieme l'Inferno dopo che Lucifero aveva usurpato il trono e promette loro un posto di riguardo al suo fianco.

I demoni lo deridono e gli rispondono picche visto che tutte le sue promesse sono sempre state vane, oltre a essere stato di recente in balia di Rowena, di Dean Winchester e il "cane" di Lucifero prima che Amara lo rinchiudesse per torturarlo arrivando persino a pulire il pavimento con la lingua.

A Grand Isle , in Luisiana , una donna Clea sta leggendo i tarocchi quando percepisce la presenza di Rowena e la invita ad entrare in casa.

Sam e Dean costringono Lucifero e Chuck a confrontarsi e fanno da moderatori durante l'incontro tra i due. Quindi Amara non va uccisa, ma va intrappolata.

Sam propone di coinvolgere anche Rowena e viene teletrasportato in Louisiana dove si trovano Rowena e Clea. Gli angeli nel frattempo rimproverano Castiel di aver lasciato spazio a Lucifero.

Se loro sono disposti a unirsi a lui, potranno fare parte della battaglia. Clea cerca di convincere Rowena e dice di essere in grado di coinvolgere altre streghe.

Dean ammette che una parte di lui non vuole che lei muoia, ma che sarebbe contento se qualcuno la uccidesse. Sam fa notare a Dean che per la prima volta, dopo anni di scelte che hanno dovuto fare sempre da soli, questa volta hanno Dio al loro fianco e possono fare le cose a suo modo.

Scesa dal tavolo, comincia a perlustrare il bunker. Lucifero si scusa con quest'ultima per averla uccisa, ma lei gli risponde di non essere stato il primo uomo a farlo.

Chuck ammette che, nonostante suoi antagonisti, sia lei che Crowley sono stati uno dei suoi "peccati piacevoli". Chiede ai suoi "soldati" se hanno le truppe in posizione.

Le prime a intervenire saranno le streghe, poi gli angeli e i demoni, poi Lucifero. Rowena "entra" nel bunker e dice ad Amara di trovarsi assieme a Dio e la esorta a raggiungerla.

Rowena le lancia un incantesimo assieme al resto delle streghe, ma Amara le uccide lasciando vive solo Rowena.

Amara indebolita, ma non ancora sconfitta, entra nell'edificio dove si ritrova davanti al fratello che accusa di averla tradita nuovamente. Lucifero, allora, la trafigge con una lancia.

Amara lo rimprovera di averla lasciata per milioni di anni da sola chiusa in una gabbia, sperando solo di morire, e gli chiede quale sia stato il suo crimine.

Chuck le dice che il mondo doveva essere creato e lei non glielo avrebbe permesso, quindi non gli ha lasciato altra scelta.

Amara dice di averlo amato e gli concede la vittoria chiedendogli di ucciderla. Robert Singer. In the aftermath in the season 10 finale, the Darkness being released, Sam and Dean meet a young sheriff's deputy named Jenna who claims people have been going rabid and killing each other.

A man whose wife has died has a newborn baby with him but he is infected. He insists on giving the baby to Jenna and the Winchesters, naming her Amara before he dies.

Dean is haunted by a vision of The Darkness telling him he set her free and they are now linked into always helping each other.

Dean wants to kill the infected and escape with the baby but Sam wants to try and cure them. Sam acts as a diversion allowing Dean and Jenna to escape, though Sam gets infected.

Castiel struggles to control himself from inflicting more violence due to Rowena's attack dog spell, and is captured by two angels when he begs for help.

Crowley regroups after narrowly escaping Castiel's attempt on his life, hearing that The Darkness has set off ancient alarms in both Heaven and Hell.

As Jenna is changing Amara's diaper, she sees the Mark of Cain on her left shoulder. Phil Sgriccia. Dean takes Jenna to her grandmother's home and leaves to help Sam.

However, Amara begins levitating her toy blocks and Jenna's religious grandmother calls an exorcist while Jenna calls Dean. Dean arrives to find the "exorcist" to be Crowley who explains that he senses an ancient darkness in the child.

At the same time, Jenna visits Amara and then suddenly murders her grandmother. Investigating the noise, Dean finds the Mark of Cain on Amara and remembering it on the woman from his vision, realizes that Amara is the Darkness.

Confronting Jenna, Crowley realizes that she is now soulless, Amara having consumed her soul. Dean and Jenna fight before Crowley kills her.

Crowley reveals he intends to use Amara for his own purposes, but Dean incapacitates him only to find Amara, now grown into a young girl, gone. Crowley later approaches Amara with people for her to feed on.

At the same time, two angels torture Castiel before Hannah saves him. When he asks about the location of the Winchesters, Castiel realizes it was a ruse to get information from him.

The other two angels try to hack his mind, but Rowena's spell gives him the strength to break free and fight back. Castiel kills the other two angels, but not before they kill Hannah.

An infected Sam works to find a cure to the Darkness' poisoning with little luck. He encounters a Reaper who informs him that he and Dean will be thrown into a void when they die; that he is "unclean in a biblical sense.

Using holy fire, Sam is able to cure himself and then save the remaining people in the town. Returning to the bunker, he and Dean find Castiel begging for help.

Sam and Dean search for Rowena to cure Castiel as well as begin to try to find Metatron before the other angels do, for information on The Darkness.

A demon tries to kill Rowena while she is attempting and failing to recruit witches for her Mega Coven, leading the Winchesters to her.

Though they take the Codex from her she has hidden The Book of the Damned. Castiel loses control as the attack dog spell takes him over and goes rogue.

While searching for Castiel, Rowena reveals the deal Sam made with her to kill Crowley if she removed the Mark of Cain from Dean, though Dean understands.

Dean saves a woman from Castiel and is attacked by the angel. Rowena restores Castiel to normal and escapes.

A low level demon and angel commiserate at a bar that the leaders of Heaven and Hell don't appear to be doing anything about The Darkness.

Meanwhile Crowley is raising Amara and even he is unnerved by her power. Amara doesn't seem interested in a world of pure evil but she feeds on enough demons to make herself a teenager and demands Crowley bring her more.

Thomas J. Seen entirely in and around the Impala: Sam and Dean head for a case where a sheriff's deputy was killed. Sam has a dream where someone or something appears to him as a younger John Winchester, telling him he and Dean have to stop The Darkness and: "God helps those who help themselves.

Sam is attacked while trying to talk to the victim's wife while Dean is attacked by the replacement sheriff's deputy and finds out shooting it with silver and beheading it doesn't kill it.

A call from Castiel explains it is a Nachzehrer , a ghoul and vampire-like creature. The wife wakes up and has been turned, kidnapping Dean in the car.

She explains she killed her husband for not joining them and the new deputy is the alpha. The alpha is restored and explains he is scared of The Darkness so he is building an army.

He will turn Sam, who is walking into a trap, and then they will eat Dean. Dean gets free and shoves copper pennies down the alpha's throat and decapitates him with the Impala's door, killing him and returning his victims to normal humans.

Both bruised Winchesters agree to stop The Darkness after they heal, driving off in the battered Impala.

A young couple is killed in a hotel that used to be the home of Lizzie Borden. Sam and Dean quickly find all the paranormal signs in the hotel are fakes for the tourists.

However, one of the hotel owners is killed, along with a man miles away from the hotel who is found by Sidney, the babysitter of his son Jordie.

The wife Dawn has an unemotional reaction to her husband's death. Dean meets Len Jared Gertner , a Lizzie Borden fan, who says he saw a girl named Amara wandering outside the hotel a few nights ago and he hasn't felt normal since he met her.

Dean realizes Amara ate Len's soul. Suspecting Dawn to be soulless as well, the Winchesters find her and her lover dead in a house with Jordie tied up.

Sidney captures the Winchesters, explaining she also met Amara who said she wanted to help Sidney. Sidney has felt blissful ever since her soul was taken, Amara helping her not care about her abusive childhood.

Sidney killed her enemies and Jordie's parents for being abusive and plans to offer the Winchesters to Amara as a gift.

Len saves the Winchesters by killing Sidney. Len can feel himself turning darker the longer he is without a soul, so in order to stop himself he turns himself in for all the murders.

The Winchesters send Jordie to an aunt and are concerned about Amara growing stronger. Amara watches them as they leave, promising to see Dean soon. John Showalter.

Amara eats the soul of a teenager named Goldie and ages slightly upward again. Crowley grounds Amara for sneaking out to eat and tries to convince her that he can be a father and teacher for her, while having her soulless victims killed to keep her a secret.

Dean and Sam are still in the area and are called in once Len is killed in jail. Goldie is arrested and the Winchesters capture the assassin meant for her.

After killing him, they track Crowley and Amara to an abandoned asylum to kill Amara. Sam fights off several demons while avoiding killing most of them to try and save the human hosts.

He also has another vision. Crowley prepares to kill Dean but Amara stops him, declaring she doesn't need him and tortures Crowley into letting Dean go.

Amara knows Dean won't kill her because of their link and says she'll soon be strong enough to exact her revenge on God.

Meanwhile, Castiel sees Metatron on television and tracks him down, taking the demon tablet. Metatron is stuck as a human and films tragedies to sell to the media for money.

Sensing a rage within Castiel, Metatron constantly mocks him, hoping to be killed since he hates being human. Castiel resists this, and gets Metatron to reveal that in order to make the world, God had to sacrifice His sister, The Darkness.

Castiel deems Metatron harmless and lets him leave, to the Winchesters' shock. Dean lies and says Amara overpowered him. Sam is horrified to realize his visions are of The Cage in which Michael and Lucifer are locked.

After a man is murdered by someone in a bunny mask that won't come off, Sheriff Donna Hanscum calls in the Winchesters for help. After learning that the killer suddenly changed after putting the mask on, they come to believe it is a cursed object.

Donna's deputy Doug is forced to kill the young man to save Donna, and she and the Winchesters burn the mask and believe it to be over.

However, a young woman in a jester mascot outfit brutally attacks the local football coach before being stopped by the school quarterback.

After the quarterback tells them that the room suddenly got cold, the Winchesters realize they are dealing with a ghost who is possessing the various costumes and those who wear them.

Using rock salt, they are able to free the latest possession victim, who tells them that the costume had recently been donated to the school. The Winchesters and Donna learn that the costumes belonged to a children's performer named Chester Johnson and after his suicide, his sister donated all of his costumes.

Realizing Chester is the ghost, Donna and Doug collect all of the costumes and burn them while Dean talks to the first victim's widow and learns that Chester supposedly molested the children of the two victims.

At the same time, Sam is unable to stop Chester from possessing another innocent victim and using him to finish off the coach.

Chester's sister Rita explains that after she was confronted with the accusations of child molestation, she worried about her own son and helped the two men get to Chester to scare him.

In doing so, Chester was accidentally killed and now wants revenge. Possessing Rita's son through the last costume, Chester attacks but Dean is able to remove the costume and Sam burns it, destroying Chester.

At the same time, Sam prays to God for guidance on his visions and explains to Dean he thinks that they mean he has to return to Lucifer's Cage and that the answer to The Darkness may be there.

Richard Speight Jr. A little girl's imaginary friend, Sparkle the unicorn-man, is killed. Sam is shocked to wake up and see his own childhood imaginary friend Sully Nate Torrence is real.

Sully had done so for Sam when he wasn't allowed to go on hunts with John and Dean. Sully thought Sam wanted to be something other than a hunter and encouraged him to run away.

However, John changed his mind and allowed Sam to join them so Sam rejects Sully as fake and Sully leaves hurt.

Sully allows Sam and Dean to see his kind to help catch the killer, but a mermaid imaginary friend is also killed. A third one is stabbed but survives and contacts Sully for help.

While Dean tracks the killer, Sam apologizes to Sully and explains his fear of returning to Lucifer's Cage. Sully forgives him and says even heroes can be scared, but they are the only ones brave enough to do what needs to be done.

The killer captures Dean, and is revealed to be a young woman named Reese. Reese and her twin sister Audrey were Sully's next children after Sam, but Audrey was killed by a car while playing tag in the street with Sully.

Sully offers to die if that is what Reese needs, though the brothers talk her out of killing him. Sully agrees to check in on Reese and wishes Sam luck.

Sam admits to Dean he thinks he has to go to the Cage. Dean says there must be another way, but has no idea what that could be.

A fully grown Amara kills religious preachers in a park and a church as attempts to get God's attention, dismissing religion as manipulation.

Sam finally convinces Dean that following the visions is their only choice, and they approach Crowley for a way to communicate with Lucifer in The Cage.

Crowley has Rowena captured to read from the Book of the Damned for this purpose and they form a tense alliance. Alone, Dean investigates the church deaths and senses Amara.

She transports him away to talk, claiming she only wants to hurt God who supposedly exiled her because she might be better at making creations.

She claims that she would rule the world to give everyone bliss like Dean feels with her. After Dean's attempt to stab her fails, Amara kisses Dean saying they are meant to be together ever since he freed her.

A low level angel rallies all the angels in Heaven against Amara. He and two others go to arrest her, saying if she resists the combined might of every angel will kill her.

Amara kills the three angels and sends Dean back to safety as the sky opens up and strikes her. Lucifer says The Darkness is equal to God in raw power and offers help if Sam agrees to be his vessel again.

Sam refuses as the warding fails to Crowley's shock, though Rowena remains calm. Lucifer has approached Rowena in a dream, promising her rewards if she helps him get to Sam.

Billie lets Dean into Hell with a "witch collar" that allows Crowley to control Rowena. Castiel and a low level angel search to see if Amara survived, while the angel points out that Castiel is more expendable than the Winchesters.

Amara survived and kills the angel, then she sends Castiel to Billie with a threat carved into his chest, though the effort it took does appear to weaken her.

Meanwhile Lucifer says Sam has gone soft. Last time he fought him, he sacrificed himself to save the world. In recent years Sam and Dean only want to save each other regardless of the cost.

Lucifer says making a sacrifice and being his vessel is the only way to stop The Darkness, since God is gone, Gabriel and Raphael are dead, and Michael has supposedly gone insane while imprisoned.

Sam refuses, not believing it's guaranteed Lucifer would win against Amara, and even if it was he'd then destroy the world himself.

Lucifer pulls Dean and Castiel into The Cage and beats all three of them, though Rowena's spell seems to work to send him away.
