But with any journey, you expect to be led to a destination For four long books, you've gone through peaks and valleys, made left turns and right turns, got led up this steep hill, and then suddenly you're dropped off on the side of the road.

Then you're just standing there looking around like "this cant be it" "you're just going to leave us here? Existential crisis like "where am I?

I wish I hadn't read it, to be honest. The structural integrity of the characters was compromised in this book. After reading the first three novels, the main characters were nothing like themselves previously.

I felt that she had so much room in this book to develop Fana's relationships and explore her "gifts" but she missed the mark. Unfortunately this novel did not live up to the previous three.

The ending, quite frankly, feels like a middle or transition, not the climax. I became more and more nervous as pages started to dwindle and the story hadn't progressed as Due led her readers to feel.

There was so much information in the front end of the book, that the lack of balance at the end felt clumsy and irresponsible. It felt rushed with very little thought put into tieing up the lose ends, the unanswered questions, and the final conclusion.

The ending feels like she was setting up to write another volume, but sadly she's stated numerous times that this is the final book in the African Immortals series.

Why create this world, and in your final book give us a sad little 5-page epilogue to conclude what should have been a marvelous climax. In order to process this book in a way that I could walk away partially satisfied, I had to re-read certain excerpts, disregarding whole sections of story lines.

If you read this book and I almost want to warn people to stop at book 3, knowing what I know now read it through the first time and evaluate how it makes you feel, if you feel it brings a solid conclusion to the series, then that is great.

She simply didn't belong in this book. Her character adds nothing but filler, as if Due had to reach a page quota.

I don't know if Due didn't want to do any additional character development for My Soul to Take , or if she was drawn to a character from a book that has ZERO connection with the current novel and wanted to do more with her but didn't have enough content to write a sequel to Joplin's Ghost , but Phoenix's story line is clunky and doesn't go with the African Immortals.

It left me so saddened for a fictional character. His character shouldn't have been written if that is what Due had planned for him and us.

Good and Evil make a compromise view spoiler [ "Don't trade away the world population for good sex and flying lessons" hide spoiler ] Since closing the book for the first time, my head swirled with questions.

Did I miss something? Did the antagonist, Michel, somehow become a protagonist? Why did our main protagonist, Fana, change so drastically?

Fana changes so suddenly in the last chapters that the readers wont even recognize her, especially if you've read the series and watched her character development from child to adult.

Still the reader is confused what to expect, will we get our old Fana back, or are we left with this husk of a shell that Fana has become? Nov 02, Ryanreads rated it liked it.

Jan 15, Anne added it. I was doing the audio version of this series and it was a real downer for the narrator of this book to be so drastically different from the previous books.

The pronunciation of some names was way off and how characters were presented vocally was really a stray from the others.

Either way, I'm glad it's over. Happy with the overall arc of the storyline and characters Due created. Just didn't love the difference in I was doing the audio version of this series and it was a real downer for the narrator of this book to be so drastically different from the previous books.

Just didn't love the difference in narration. Not to say this narrator was bad, just so different. Sep 28, Tawanda rated it really liked it Shelves: booktini.

The only reason I didn't give it a 5 is because I felt compelled to do a little background research on the characters and I don't like my novels to have homework.

Sep 29, Vanessa rated it it was ok. I enjoyed this the least out of the immortal series. I am so use to Mrs. Due making historic correlations throughout her writing.

I'm still trying to figure out Phoenix's role in the novel. I simply loved the history in Joplin's Ghost, but found Phoenix's character irritating, and not plausible.

Apr 28, Thomas rated it liked it Shelves: , fantasy , dark. It's been a long haul to get through this series.

I started the first book at the end of January, and finished the last one days away from May. It also didn't help that I had to include Joplin's Ghost, which was another hefty book.

Speaking of Joplin's Ghost, the reason I read it was because the main character of that book, Phoenix, is a central character in My Soul to T It's been a long haul to get through this series.

Speaking of Joplin's Ghost, the reason I read it was because the main character of that book, Phoenix, is a central character in My Soul to Take, but I couldn't really see why.

Her character plays a role in Fana's story, but I couldn't see why it had to be Phoenix, as opposed to another character, even one that had already been introduced.

My guess is Due included her so readers would feel compelled to read her other book, like I did. As good as it was, I appreciate it, but it also aggravates me.

By now, so much has happened to change the core immortals from My Soul to Keep that it seems like they're all playing fast and loose with that immortality.

It seems like everyone's getting immortal now, which makes the whole premise less special. Granted, the story has shifted away from the immortals to Fana and Michel, who are now basically gods, and how they view the rest of the world.

The way the book ends means that Due could return to this series again, but I hope she doesn't. I think the more time she spends with the story, the more convoluted parts of the story become.

I know it sounds like I didn't like the book or the series, but I did. Due is a talented writer, and I like how she develops her characters, but three months with one series is a long time, and it might have bred some contempt on my part.

I would recommend it to readers of modern fantasy and horror, but maybe they should parse the series out over time to avoid burning out on it.

Nov 10, Ron Grant rated it really liked it. For me nothing has yet lived up to "The Living Blood" in this series, but this is the book that has probably come the closest.

I loved how Due was able to weave characters from "Joplin's Ghost" into this book and make it seamless. It's also really dope to see Fana grow into a woman from the little girl that she was in "The Living Blood".

And I even had some sympathy for the main antagonist, Michel. Personally I also love how Due doesn't yet seem to be done with this series.

Will we see Fana have For me nothing has yet lived up to "The Living Blood" in this series, but this is the book that has probably come the closest.

Will we see Fana have children? Will she get back to the young woman she was before, or will she end up like her mother Jessica?

Or her father, Dawit? This was a very good read, and I think it sets us up for another great book in the African Immortals series.

At least I hope it does. Mar 19, Honey Bee rated it it was ok. I really wanted to like this book, I truly did.

I lost interest in this book about halfway through. I read all 4 books back to back, with that being said the random flash backs and reminders of the previous books was very annoying.

I wish there was a prologue or one chapter to review instead of the random placement. Maybe for someone who didnt read the entire series this would was helpful.

As far as the characters I really liked the idea of Fana and Michele but not like this. There was no point t I really wanted to like this book, I truly did.

There was no point to emphasizing how much Fana and Michele's mom looked alike, if that storyline would go no where.

Phoenix and her families storyline was pointless and added nothing to the story. I would have preferred to read more about Caitlyn or Johnny's family's.

What ever happened to them, or Omari from The Blood Colony. Why did Khaldun not make another appearance? Mar 15, Leslie rated it really liked it. I read this for women in horror month and was disappointed.

An article I read hyped it for being very scary and it did not hit my expectations and if anything only comes off as slightly creepy.

The world building is intriguing as was the story. Main characters are developed to a point where in meshes with the progress of the novel and the lore of the story leaves you wanting to know more.

Will definitely read on to the second boo I read this for women in horror month and was disappointed. Who knows maybe it gets scary as the trilogy goes on!

Jan 21, Jess rated it liked it. Imagine fasting for a week and saving your calories for a delicious cheat meal. And your sprite tastes like spit.

This is just as disappointing. The author did her best to keep the momentum going but towards the end it all just fell apart and worked out a little too well.

An interesting end to the series, less conflict than I was expecting and in a way it was a bit of a fizzle out rather than a strong end.

Everything gets tied up fairly well with all the plot threads but there's still lots of questions remaining and the religious side of the story and Khaldun's story is still left mostly blank.

Rapper Calboy also used this rhyme in the beginning of his song Envy Me. American rapper Kid Cudi features the latter two lines of the rhyme repeatedly in the hook to his song "The Prayer," on his debut mixtape A Kid Named Cudi.

My Soul to Take

Bug goes back to his room, discovering Jerome, mortally wounded, in his closet. After Jerome dies, Alex reappears and suggests that Bug inherited Dissociative Identity Disorder from his father, and had unknowingly killed everyone.

Bug rejects this idea. The souls of the dead Seven are now part of him, and together they help him deduce that Alex is, in fact, the one with the Ripper's soul.

He proposes that they kill Fang and pin the murders on Jerome to appear as heroes. Bug refuses, stabbing Alex in the stomach.

Freed from the Ripper's soul, Alex dies as himself in a touching moment between best friends. Although Bug expects to be arrested, Fang tells the police everything, clearing his name.

The town proclaims him a hero. Despite not feeling like one, he narrates that he would "fake it good" in order to honor Alex's memory.

Henry Hopper, son of late actor Dennis Hopper , was originally cast in the lead role of Bug, but was replaced by Thieriot after Hopper contracted mononucleosis.

Paulina Olszynski plays Brittany Cunningham, who shares a mutual secret attraction to Adam. Nick Lashaway plays Brandon O'Neal, a "dashing, athletic jock" and "the handsomest boy in his school" who is attracted to Brittany.

Emily Meade plays Leah "Fang". Although many of the main scenes were filmed in multiple rural Massachusetts towns, with the majority of outdoor scenes by the river and covered bridge being shot in Kent, CT at Bull's Bridge, many of the high school scenes were shot in the then-vacant Tolland High School now Tolland Middle School in Tolland, Connecticut.

The film was shot in 2D. Because of the rising popularity of 3D films, it was post-converted to 3-D. My Soul to Take was theatrically released on October 8, , [17] with screenings in 3-D.

It had placed the record for the lowest opening of a 3D film released at over venues, claiming the record from Alpha and Omega until Gulliver's Travels [18] claimed the record two months later.

Despite the negative reviews, Wes Craven said he was really proud of the movie: "When you do a film like My Soul to Take and people think it sucks, that hurts.

Jan 05, The fact that this hasn't yet been picked up by the "shitty horror canon" cult is completely beyond me. Inept in the most hilarious and incoherent of ways, My Soul to Take is nearly two hours of a once renowned horror master flying off the rails in grandiose fashion.

Absolutely worth catching, unless this sort of schadenfreude-fueled spectacle isn't really your scene. Drew S Super Reviewer. Dec 02, Wes Craven is a horror genius, but what the hell was he thinking when making this shit.

The plot of this was too boring and stupid to explain, the story scrambled up and has so many things happening that we simply just don't care what happens.

I mean, almost every scene had something completely retarded, whether it was cheesy moments or terrible dialogue.

Oh yeah, the dialogue, I almost forgot, this film has some of the worst dialogue in film history, maybe worse than Star Wars The Phantom Menace.

In horror films I like dumb characters, but these characters were not dumb, they were stupid, annoying, and probably the worst cast I have ever witnessed in a horror film, if you've seen the film you know what im talking about.

The movie relies completely with jump moments that were not scary, the whole movie is one big annoying piece of shit that will not scare anyone.

Anyone who thought this was scary is going to have a lot of problems in life, what a terrible movie. Bradley W Super Reviewer. Oct 23, You could view this movie as a dry run by Craven for his upcoming "Scream 4".

If that's the case the Scream franchise is seriously screwed. This movie is a mess, yet another by a once horror-master who just can't capture the zeitgeist anymore.

The script is written by Craven himself and has the worst teen dialogue outside a Diablo Cody screenplay.

For half the movie I just didn't have a clue what these kids were talking about. For example the obligatory jock character gives our lead a dig in the ribs, referring to this as an "eight".

Later the obligatory bitch character says he should have made it a "twenty". Wes, you're in your seventies, don't try and be down with the kids, just do your own thing.

Of course Craven is partly responsible, thanks to "Scream", for the insistence on horror being aimed at the teen dollar. If you compare it to John Carpenter after "Halloween", he rejected offers of countless teen oriented slashers.

Since "Scream" Craven has made two awful sequels, the laughable werewolf movie "Cursed" and this turkey. If you were burying a time capsule and wanted to represent bad horror movies in the early 21st century this is the one to include.

It's so cliched that even the asian character is the first to die and nobody seems to notice he's missing from school the next day.

There's a twist near the end that's completely redundant to anyone who paid attention to the opening sequence. The kids are meant to be sixteen but all look You get the idea.

If you've read my review of John Carpenter's "The Ward" you might think I have a problem with the seventies genre masters.

That's not the case at all, I'm just being hard on them because I know they can do so much better.

Leave the kids to their "Twilight" franchise and just do your own thing guys, after all great horror is timeless.

That's because the latter was made by a director who didn't want to be hip, just horrific. The Movie W Super Reviewer. See all Audience reviews.
