After three weeks of pedaling and sleeping outdoors, having a roof over my head, a tatami floor beneath my feet, hot food on my plate, and overall the tranquility of the monastery, not only eliminated the ascetic component of that retreat, but felt almost like a balmy vacation.
Even the many hours sitting still, without movement, served to heal the tendinitis of my knees caused by so much pedalling.
Upon its completion, when rather than taking the bus with my fellow meditators I took the bike, I could not help but wince emotionally.
A very cold Japanese November awaited. The cosmic implications of that date are obvious and identical to those of Christmas. The winter solstice marks a turning point, that date is when the sun stops falling and begins to climb again on the sky and over the horizon.
The week that culminates on that date fist week of December , Zen Buddhist temples frequently hold a meditation retreat called Rohatsu.
During those long and joyous mornings in Japan, reading, meditation and yoga absorbed all my interest, to the point that the rest of my day became a formality to meet.
Gradually and without realizing it, I was becoming an ascetic monk. In addition to nationality and profession, we shared the same degree of spirituality, he from a Catholic perspective and I from a Buddhist, but both with equal degree of depth and openness.
At the monastery, we sat for four periods of fifty minutes, interspersed by ten minutes of walking meditation, a truly demanding first-experience.
I asked him about the discomfort, the sore legs and the insects some green pentagon-shaped bugs that fly straight to crash loudly against the walls of paper or the meditators, that had been bothering all day long.

Re: Antaiji Thanks Matt! This is the same one as what I saw on NHK. Though the one you shared was in English which was nice to pick up on a few things I missed my wife also helped with translating when viewing the Japanese version.
Re: Antaiji Certainly looks like an interesting and very challenging place! Antithetical to the "funeral mill" style of temple Jundo has talked about.
Btw, I know there are at least a few Antaiji style communities in the US. But just then, something amazing happened: the clouds that covered the mountains opened for a moment, and a ray of sunlight hit me in the eyes.
It was the sign I needed. A snow-plow passed me so I could put my wheels on the track it was leaving behind.
The few vehicles equipped with chains on their wheels that ventured on that road that day threw over me a barrage of dirty snow, for sure wondering who was the madman traveling by bike towards the ominous mountains.
I started to climb curve after curve, some on the bike and some walking on the boots soaked by the icy floods that often crossed the road. Finally, late in the afternoon, I reached the highest point, where a very long tunnel would take me to the south side.
I was elated, thinking the worst was over. I was wrong. The descent without pedaling and at such low temperature caused my whole body to get frozen almost immediately, specially my hands, face and feet.
In the first village of the valley, when I got off the bike I was stiff as an icicle, and the pain in my hands and feet was so intense that it took me several minutes to remove my boots.
I entered a lounge area and ordered a bowl of soup ramen on which to inhale, dip my fingers, and even rub my feet, among the pangs of the blood reconquering the skin.
After having sensations again, I went out to kick the bike, but not as a punishment for its behavior, but to free it from the ice that imprisoned it.
With the last rays of the sun, the same who had invited me to this side of the mountains, I could enjoy the views of a pristine mountain scenery.
Finally, I reached a small town where I could dry my clothes, boots and sleeping bag in a laundry shop.
That night I found a small temple particularly calm and cozy where I had a very restful sleep and above freezing temperature.

From there, I had only four kilometers uphill to visit one of the major Zen temples in Japan, and during the Rohatsu, the most important meditation retreat of the year.
As I climbed, I speculated on the number of monks and meditators gathered for the occasion. The narrowness of the path did not anticipate the plain that opened at the end, with the monastery centered on it, and larger than expected.
I knocked on the door and, to my surprise, a German monk opened it. I was intrigued by the silence and the absence of bustle I assumed intrinsic to such important retreat.
