I believe, if the director had gotten it his way, had the correct script, was able to direct Lundgren and Lee his way, Smartened up the light moments and humor between the two we could have gotten another type of lethal weapon franchise.
Instead we got, a movie seemingly attempting to serve two masters, Lethal Weapon, and Big Trouble in Little China, unfortunately not serving either one very well at all.

I do like the fact that they put forth a little bit of comedy in the fact that the part Asian fellow knows nothing about the culture from which he's from, and the western guy as well versed in the Asian culture, somewhat of comic relief in this.
What I will say is that the acting is not top notch as far as Brandon Lee is concerned, however the movie is very entertaining and if you are looking to get that Comfort feeling that you did watching 80s martial arts movies this is the movie for you.
I wasn't expecting anything from this movie except maybe some well choreographed martial arts sequences and I wasn't disappointed.
He's got a well rounded out repertoire of sharp, quick moves, much more so than Van Dam. It was fun to catch the recognizable moments where bits of his dad showed through.
The movie itself was a vaudevillian, almost keystone cop'ish like romp of gratuitous sex and violence. Good fight scenes.

Few rare buddy cop films are made. This one from has late great brandon lee pair up with dolph lundren to stop the yakuza in little tokyo.
Good chemist between both actors. Dolph Lundgren really shines in this movie. The plot and action sequences are fantastic. Brandon Lee is his perfect counter part.

Dolph lifting up a probably 4, lb car on its side with very little effort but I think that just comes with the territory. Action, humor, a short but steamy sex scene, a taste of martial arts, etc.
When I was watching the opening credits it immediately reminded me of Lethal Weapon, mostly I guess because of the type of film, late eighties early nineties style.
Upon reading the X ray notes of the movie, it was said that they initially wanted it too be more serious, but that studio wanted it to be more "tongue in cheek".
Well, the films looks like that is exactly what happened. Like it was trying to head in both directions at the same time, and failed at both, miserably.
I believe, after watching it they should have gone with the more serious feel of the Lethal Weapon franchise, because the back story of Lundgrens character was a serious one, and the bringing of serious drugs, the violence, the Yakuza called for it.
Also, there a few moments when you see where the editing process deleted what was supposed to be a more serious relationship between the characters.
In the end, Camping up didn't work, it just came out as completely ridiculous cheese. Believe it or not, Lundgrens acting in this was better than Lees but I chalk this up to experience and the scrip Lee had to work with.
